Nasogastric tubes (NGTs) are typically made of flexible plastic materials such as PVC or silicone, which are resistant to bending and can be easily inserted into the nasal passages and stomach. These tubes are sized according to their diameter and length, using the French scale (Fr). Sizes range from 8Fr to 18Fr, with 8Fr to 12Fr commonly used for children, and larger sizes (14Fr and above) used for adults or patients requiring faster drainage or larger volumes of fluids.
Types of Nasogastric Tubes:
PVC Nasogastric Tube: Made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), it is typically used for short-term applications. It is stiffer and may cause irritation to the nose and throat.
Silicone Nasogastric Tube: Made from softer, more flexible silicone material, this type is suitable for long-term use. It causes less discomfort to the patient but is typically more expensive.
Double Lumen Nasogastric Tube: Features two separate channels for simultaneous drainage and feeding. It is mainly used in patients who require both feeding and stomach drainage at the same time.
